Mercedes Schlapp has no easy job in her role her position as White House adviser for strategic communications. In her role as the White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Schlapp has to face a variety of problems. The president is the director of his own communications. There are numerous legal matters that could affect the messaging strategy. And Cabinet Secretaries who have been involved in controversy. Schlapp is able to keep her eye on the ball through the entire process, collaborating closely with White House policy and political teams, along with the legislative affairs team and shops. She has focused on topics such as school safety, opiates, infrastructure, and trade. She has not had much contact with media outlets in her role. The attention she attracted in March was when she was named one of the contenders to replace Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration roiled by a variety of issues, including the president's role as his own director of communications as well as Cabinet Secretaries that are embroiled in their respective controversies. But through it all Schlapp has stayed focussed on the task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as in the communications department to coordinate policy rollouts. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids and infrastructure and trade. The reporter doesn't get to interact very much in her present position. There was a great deal of press attention after she was identified as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. It was a tense battle. Schlapp's allies began fighting with Tony Sayegh in the press. Schlapp stated that after she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she sat down for a chat with the latter.
